How Does Surrogacy Work?

How Does Surrogacy Work?

If you are an intended parent who is trying to conceive a child but you are struggling with infertility, surrogacy can be an excellent way for you to fulfill your dreams of having a biological child of your own without needing to carry the child yourself.

In the surrogacy process, an egg is either donated or taken from the biological mother’s uterus, fertilized with donated sperm or the biological father’s sperm through in vitro fertilization (IVF), and then transferred as an embryo into a surrogate’s womb, where the embryo develops into a baby during pregnancy.

Surrogacy may initially feel like an uncomfortable or involved option, but with the help of a knowledgeable and respected agency, you will have assistance in choosing a surrogate mother, setting up the appropriate legal contracts, and making sure that both you and your surrogate receive excellent medical care. At Baby Steps Surrogacy Center, Inc., we will put your family first and support you every step of the way.

Finding a Surrogate

When looking for a surrogate, you will need to decide whether you want to move forward with traditional surrogacy or gestational surrogacy. In a traditional surrogacy arrangement, the surrogate mother will use her own egg. Artificial insemination is used to place the sperm into the surrogate mother’s womb, where the egg and sperm will then ideally create an embryo.

Finding a surrogate when pursuing traditional surrogacy may involve a more detailed search process because the genetics of the surrogate mother will affect the child more directly. As opposed to ensuring the mother is simply healthy for pregnancy, you will want to ensure the mother’s genetic background is suitable for your child’s future.

In gestational surrogacy, we help match you with a surrogate who has a healthy body mass index, is within healthy childbearing age range, has already carried a baby to full-term in an uncomplicated pregnancy, has no sexually transmitted diseases, and is a nonsmoker with no history of recreational drug use. We want your surrogate to be as healthy as possible so that your child is healthy, as well.
